The County of Camden encompasses an area of 222.01 square miles and is in the southwestern portion of New Jersey. Camden County is part of the Philadelphia Primary Standard Metropolitan Area (PSMA) that also includes Burlington and Gloucester Counties in New Jersey and Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia Counties in Pennsylvania. The county is situated on the Delaware River directly across from the City of Philadelphia. Burlington County is to the north while Gloucester County is to the south.
Camden County is connected to the City of Philadelphia and the State of Pennsylvania by three bridges: (1) the Benjamin Franklin, (2) the Walt Whitman and (3) the Betsy Ross Bridges. Camden County is also within overnight transportation to almost one-third of the nation’s population. Six of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas – Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D. C., Baltimore, and Pittsburgh are located within this area. Utilities within the County are available through Public Service Electric and Gas Company, Jersey Central Power and Light, Connective Power Delivery Company, South Jersey Gas Company and the Verizon Telephone Company. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the County’s population has increased to 513,657 in 2010 from 508,932 in 2000, representing a 0.1%± increase. This is almost identical to the growth rate in the previous decade.
The county’s median household income was $60,976 compared to the national average of $69,811. The per capita income was $29,478 compared to the national average of $34,858. Approximately 11.2% of the county residents are below the poverty line. There were 190,670 households with 2.65 persons per household. Camden County offers all of the amenities of a desirable place to work and live. In conclusion, Camden County, lying in the heart of the Philadelphia Metropolitan Area, had experienced good growth as the regional and national economies have recovered from the most recent recession.
